How to convert JPG to WebP
- Tap Choose JPG images or drag your photos onto the box. JPG, JPEG and JFIF files work.
- Set the quality. 80% is a good default for websites.
- Tap Convert to WebP, then Download each file.
Each result shows the original and new size, with the percentage saved.
Why use WebP?
WebP is an image format developed by Google that compresses photos more efficiently than JPG. At the same visual quality, WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller. For websites, that means:
- Faster pages, especially on mobile data.
- Better Core Web Vitals, the speed measurements Google uses as a ranking signal.
- Less bandwidth and storage on your hosting.
All current browsers support WebP, including Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, and so does Android.
Choosing the quality
| Quality | Best for |
|---|---|
| 85–90% | Photography portfolios, product photos with fine detail |
| 75–85% | Most website images and blog photos |
| 60–75% | Thumbnails and background images |
Compare the result before replacing your originals. Lower quality can show blocky areas in smooth gradients such as skies.
Using WebP on your website
If you're replacing JPGs on a website, update the image links to the new .webp files. Many content management systems and image plugins can also serve WebP automatically.
When to keep JPG
Keep JPG for images you'll email, attach to forms, upload to older systems or edit in older desktop software, since some still don't accept WebP. Keep your original JPGs as a backup either way.
