What is X?

X, formerly Twitter, is a social network for short public posts, real-time news and conversation. People use it to follow breaking news, sports, politics, celebrities, brands and experts, post their own updates, and reply to anyone with a public account. It also has live audio rooms called Spaces, long-form video, Communities and an AI assistant, Grok, built in.

The company was bought by Elon Musk in 2022 and renamed X in July 2023. The Android app kept its original package name, so millions of phones updated straight from Twitter to X. It has passed 1 billion downloads on Google Play and is one of the social apps we list.

What's new in X 12.39.0

The latest X APK on Google Play is version 12.39.0-prod.01, updated on November 4, 2026. Play doesn't show release notes for X, which ships updates very frequently and switches features on from its servers.

Key features

Posts and timelines

Write posts with text, photos, videos, GIFs and polls. The For You timeline recommends posts using X's algorithm, while Following shows accounts you follow in time order. Lists let you build custom feeds around topics or groups of people.

The Explore tab shows trending topics and news in your region. Community Notes, written by users and rated across different viewpoints, add context under posts that may be misleading.

Spaces and video

Spaces are live audio conversations anyone can join and listen to. X also supports long videos and live video streams.

Grok built in

X includes Grok, the AI assistant also available as a separate Grok app. You can ask it to explain a post or summarise what people are saying about a topic.

Premium

X Premium subscriptions add an edit button, longer posts, fewer ads, a verification checkmark, and higher Grok usage. Prices depend on the tier and your country.

How to install X APK on Android

Install X from Google Play.

  1. Check that your phone runs Android 9 or newer.
  2. Open Google Play, search for X (or Twitter), and confirm the developer is X Corp.
  3. Tap Install and open the app.
  4. Log in or sign up with an email address or phone number, then pick some topics and accounts to follow.

X Corp. doesn't publish an APK outside Google Play. Unofficial files labelled "Twitter" or "X" from other sites can steal your login, so stick to the official listing.

Is X APK safe?

The official X app from Google Play is safe to install. It's published by X Corp., rated Mature 17+, contains ads, and offers in-app purchases from $0.99 to $999.99 per item.

  • Content. X allows adult and graphic content. Turn off sensitive media in Settings → Privacy and safety → Content you see. The Mature 17+ rating means it isn't suitable for younger teens.
  • Account security. Turn on two-factor authentication and use a passkey or authenticator app rather than SMS where possible.
  • Scams. Crypto giveaways, fake customer support accounts and impersonators are common. A checkmark no longer guarantees that an account is who it claims to be.
  • Privacy. Review who can tag you, find you by email or phone, and send you direct messages, and protect your posts if you want only approved followers to see them.

X settings worth changing

  • Following timeline. Pin Following so X opens on accounts you chose instead of recommendations.
  • Muted words. In Settings → Privacy and safety → Mute and block, mute words, phrases and hashtags for a set time or forever. It's useful for avoiding spoilers or topics you're tired of.
  • Who can reply. When you post, choose whether everyone, accounts you follow, or only mentioned accounts can reply.
  • Direct messages. Limit message requests to people you follow or verified accounts, and filter low-quality messages.
  • Discoverability. Turn off "Let others find you by your email/phone".
  • Data sharing and Grok. In privacy settings, choose whether your posts and interactions can be used to train Grok.

Using X with less data

X loads a lot of video. In Settings → Accessibility, display and languages → Data usage, turn on data saver and set video autoplay to Wi-Fi only. You can also choose to load high-quality images only on Wi-Fi, which makes a big difference on limited mobile plans. Clearing the app's cache in your phone's settings frees up storage without logging you out.

X vs alternatives

  • Threads is Meta's text-based alternative, linked to Instagram, with a calmer feed.
  • Facebook is better for groups, events and people you know personally.
  • Instagram focuses on photos, Reels and Stories.

For live news, sports and public debate, X is still where many conversations happen first. Set up your content filters and security on day one, and use the Following timeline if the algorithm's suggestions aren't for you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install X on Android?

Open Google Play, search for X and check the developer is X Corp. before tapping Install. It needs Android 9 or newer. It's free to install, and Play keeps it updated automatically. Avoid copies from other sites: they aren't from X Corp. and may be altered, so the safest way to use X is the official listing.

Is X the same app as Twitter?

Yes. Twitter was renamed X in July 2023 after Elon Musk bought the company. The Android app kept the same package name, com.twitter.android, so updating Twitter turned it into X. Posts, formerly tweets, and your followers carried over.

Why is X rated Mature 17+?

Google Play rates X Mature 17+ because the platform allows adult content and users can see posts from anyone. You can hide sensitive media in Settings → Privacy and safety → Content you see, and younger teens should use a different app.

Can I use X without an account?

Not really. X requires you to log in to browse most content in the app and on the web. You can create a free account with an email address or phone number.
