What is TikTok?

TikTok is a short-video app. Open it and the For You feed starts playing videos picked for you, from people you don't follow as much as from people you do, and the more you watch, the better it gets at guessing what you'll like. It's published on Google Play by TikTok Pte. Ltd., part of ByteDance, under the title "TikTok - Videos, Shop & LIVE."

The app has been on Google Play since July 2015 (its package name, com.zhiliaoapp.musically, dates back to Musical.ly, the app TikTok merged with in 2018). It has more than a billion downloads there.

Besides watching, you can make your own videos with music, effects and filters, reply to other videos with Duets and Stitches, watch and host LIVE streams, and buy products through TikTok Shop in supported countries. It's one of the most-used social media apps, and also one of the easiest to lose hours in.

What's new in TikTok

The TikTok app on Google Play was last updated on October 29, 2026. Google Play shows the version and minimum Android version as "Varies with device," because TikTok ships different builds to different phones.

The release notes on Play mention one change: you can quickly find and tag your friends in comments. TikTok rolls most features out gradually from its servers, so you may see changes at a different time from friends on the same app version.

The For You feed

Swipe up for the next video. TikTok learns from what you watch, like, share and skip. Long-press a video and tap Not interested to see less of something, or refresh your feed in Settings and privacy if it has gone off track.

Creating videos

Tap + to record or upload clips, add a sound from TikTok's library, apply effects and filters, and add text and stickers. You can save drafts and post later, or schedule them from TikTok's tools on a computer. For more advanced editing, TikTok works closely with CapCut, ByteDance's video editor.

Duet and Stitch

Duet puts your video side by side with someone else's; Stitch lets you use a short clip of another video before yours. Both are common ways to react to or join in on trends. You can turn them off for your own videos.

LIVE

Go LIVE to stream to your followers in real time, if your account meets TikTok's requirements. Viewers can send virtual gifts, bought with coins, which is where most of TikTok's in-app purchases come from.

TikTok Shop

In supported countries, creators and brands can sell products directly in videos and LIVE streams, with checkout inside the app.

Settings worth changing

Under Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy:

1. Screen time: set a daily limit and break reminders.
2. Privacy → Private account: only approved followers see your videos.
3. Privacy → Comments, Duet and Stitch: choose who can interact with your videos.
4. Family Pairing: parents can link to a teen's account to manage screen time, messages and content settings.
5. Security and permissions: turn on two-step verification.

How to install TikTok APK on Android

Install TikTok from Google Play and check that the developer is TikTok Pte. Ltd. TikTok doesn't distribute a separate APK of its own for most regions.

1. Open Google Play and search for TikTok, or use the link above.
2. Tap Install, then open TikTok and sign up or log in.
3. If your phone has no Play Store, any TikTok APK comes from a third-party mirror. If you use one, Android will refuse to install it over the official TikTok unless it's signed by TikTok.
4. If you downloaded a file from APKPeer, check that the SHA-256 matches the one on this page. We link to Google Play only, so there's no APKPeer file for TikTok.
5. If you installed from a file, turn off the install permission under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps.

Is TikTok APK safe?

The official TikTok app is safe to install in the sense that it's a legitimate, signed app from TikTok Pte. Ltd. that Google Play rates Teen. Play marks it as containing ads and in-app purchases, which range from $0.05 to $9,999.90 per item, mainly coins for LIVE gifts.

Privacy and government scrutiny are the bigger story. TikTok is owned by ByteDance, and several governments have restricted it over data concerns; India has blocked it since 2020. TikTok collects detailed data about what you watch and how you use the app to drive its recommendations, as its privacy policy describes. The screen-time and privacy settings above are worth setting up on day one, especially for teenagers.

Modified TikTok APKs that remove ads, unlock regions or add video downloading aren't made by TikTok. They can steal your login and get accounts banned. APKPeer only links to the official app.

TikTok vs alternatives

• Instagram has Reels for short video plus photos, Stories and messaging, and is better if you want to follow people you know.
• Snapchat focuses on messaging friends with disappearing Snaps, with Spotlight as a smaller short-video feed.
• CapCut isn't a social app, but it's the editor most TikTok creators use to make videos before posting.

If short video is what you want, TikTok is where most of it happens. Set a screen-time limit before you start scrolling.
