What is Facebook?

Facebook is the world's largest social network, run by Meta Platforms. The Android app lets you post updates and photos, follow friends and pages, join Groups about almost any interest, watch Reels and videos, find local events, and buy and sell secondhand items on Marketplace. In some countries it also includes Facebook Dating.

The app has passed 10 billion downloads on Google Play, making it one of the most installed Android apps ever. It's in our social apps category, along with Meta's lighter version, Facebook Lite.

What's new in the latest Facebook update

Google Play shows the Facebook APK version as "Varies with device", with the latest update on October 28, 2026. Meta publishes different builds for different phones and processors, and Play picks the right one. Play doesn't list release notes for Facebook, and Meta updates the app roughly weekly, turning features on gradually from its servers.

If something looks different from what a friend sees, that's usually a staged rollout rather than a different version.

Key features

Feed and Reels

Your feed mixes posts from friends, Groups and pages with recommended content. The Feeds tab can show only friends, Groups or pages in time order. Reels are short vertical videos, and you can create your own with music, effects and text.

Groups

Groups are often the main reason people still use Facebook: local neighbourhood groups, hobby groups, buy-and-sell groups, support groups and fan communities. Each group sets its own rules, and admins can approve posts and members.

Marketplace

Marketplace lets you browse and list items for sale near you, from furniture to phones. You chat with buyers and sellers through Messenger and arrange pickup or shipping, depending on your country.

Events and Pages

Find local events, see which friends are going, and follow Pages for businesses, public figures and organisations.

Accounts Center

Accounts Center links your Facebook, Instagram and Threads accounts, and holds your password, security and ad settings in one place.

How to install Facebook APK on Android

Facebook comes preinstalled on many Android phones. If it isn't on yours, install Facebook from Google Play.

  1. Open Google Play, search for Facebook, and check the developer is Meta Platforms, Inc.
  2. Tap Install. Play gives you the build that matches your phone.
  3. Open Facebook and log in, or create a new account.
  4. Allow notifications if you want alerts for messages and Group activity.

Meta doesn't publish a Facebook APK for download outside Play. Files from other sites aren't official and are a common way to steal Facebook logins. If your phone is low on storage or your connection is slow, try Facebook Lite instead.

Is Facebook APK safe?

The official Facebook app from Google Play is safe. It's published by Meta Platforms, Inc., rated Teen, contains ads, and lists in-app purchases from $0.05 to $10,000.00 per item for things like Stars and Meta Verified.

The main risks are to your account and privacy:

  • Phishing. Messages claiming your page will be deleted, or that you've won something, often lead to fake login pages. Always log in through the app itself.
  • Two-factor authentication. Turn it on in Accounts Center → Password and security.
  • Privacy. Run Privacy Checkup to choose who sees your posts, friend list and contact details, and review Ad preferences.
  • Marketplace scams. Meet in public places, don't pay deposits for items you haven't seen, and be wary of buyers who want to pay with unusual methods.

Facebook settings worth changing

  • Privacy Checkup. Under Settings & privacy → Privacy Center, run Privacy Checkup to choose who sees your future posts, friends list, email and phone number.
  • Profile lock. In some countries you can lock your profile so only friends see your photos and posts.
  • Login alerts. Turn on alerts for unrecognised logins in Accounts Center → Password and security.
  • Ad preferences. In Accounts Center → Ad preferences, review which advertisers have reached you and turn off ads based on partner data.
  • Notifications. Facebook sends a lot of notifications. Trim them in Settings → Notifications so you only hear about messages, comments and Groups you care about.
  • Data use. Turn on Data saver if you're on a limited mobile plan. It loads lower-quality images and stops videos playing automatically.

Facebook storage and battery

The full Facebook app is large and keeps a big cache of photos and videos. If your phone is running out of space, clear the cache in Settings → Apps → Facebook → Storage, which doesn't log you out. If the app still feels heavy, Facebook Lite gives you the same account in a much smaller package.

Facebook vs alternatives

  • Facebook Lite uses far less data and storage, and works well on older phones.
  • Instagram is Meta's photo and video app, with a younger audience and more focus on visuals.
  • Threads is Meta's text-first app for public conversations.

For Groups, Marketplace and keeping in touch with family, Facebook is still hard to replace. Spend five minutes in Privacy Checkup after installing so you share only what you mean to.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install Facebook on Android?

Open Google Play, search for Facebook and check the developer is Meta Platforms, Inc. before tapping Install. Google Play only shows the Install button if your phone is compatible. It's free to install, and Play keeps it updated automatically. Avoid copies from other sites: they aren't from Meta Platforms, Inc. and may be altered, so the safest way to use Facebook is the official listing.

What's the difference between Facebook and Facebook Lite?

Facebook Lite is a much smaller app designed for older phones, slow connections and limited data. It has the core features, including the feed, Groups, Marketplace and messages, with simpler visuals. The full Facebook app has every feature but uses more storage, data and battery.

Why does Google Play say "Varies with device" for Facebook?

Meta publishes several builds of Facebook for different phones, processors and screen sizes, and Google Play delivers the one that matches your device. That's why Play shows "Varies with device" instead of one version number.

Do I need Messenger to chat on Facebook?

On Android, Facebook sends you to the separate Messenger app for full chats, voice and video calls. You can read and reply to some messages in Facebook itself, and Facebook Lite has messaging built in.

How do I secure my Facebook account?

Turn on two-factor authentication in Accounts Center → Password and security, use a strong unique password, and check Where you're logged in for unknown devices. Never enter your password on pages reached through messages promising prizes or account warnings.
