What is Truecaller?
Truecaller is a caller ID and spam-blocking app. When an unknown number calls, it shows a name and warns you if other users have reported the number as spam or a scam. It's made by Truecaller, a Swedish company, and listed on Google Play as "Truecaller: Spam Call Blocker," with more than a billion downloads since May 2012.
It's especially popular in countries where spam and scam calls are a daily problem, such as India, where many people consider it essential. Truecaller can replace your phone's dialer and messaging app, or just run alongside them and pop up caller ID when someone rings.
How it knows who's calling is also why it's controversial: its directory is built partly from contacts that users share with it. It's one of the communication apps we cover, and the one where it's most worth understanding the privacy trade-off before you install.
What's new in Truecaller
The Truecaller app on Google Play was last updated on October 29, 2026. Google Play lists the version as "Varies with device" and requires Android 8.0 or newer. The release notes on Play list:
- Easier Assistant setup. The Assistant can handle unknown numbers and detect scams in real time, even from numbers that look safe.
- Family Protection. A new way to help keep family members safe from spam and scam calls.
- Redesigned block settings with more control over your protection.
- Bug fixes, performance improvements and a smoother experience.
Key features
Caller ID
When an unknown number calls, Truecaller shows the caller's name and, often, a business label or spam warning. It works for calls from numbers not saved in your contacts.
Spam and scam blocking
Numbers reported by many users are flagged as spam, and you can choose to block top spammers automatically. You can also block any number or a whole series of numbers yourself, which helps when scammers keep calling from similar numbers.
The Assistant
Truecaller's Assistant can answer calls from unknown numbers for you, ask who's calling and why, and show you a live transcript, so you can decide whether to pick up. It's part of Truecaller's paid features in many regions.
SMS filtering
If you make Truecaller your SMS app, it sorts messages into categories and moves spam and promotional messages out of your inbox.
Family Protection
New in this update, Family Protection is designed to help protect family members from spam and scam calls. Truecaller explains the details inside the app.
Your privacy: how to unlist your number
Truecaller's directory includes names that users have saved in their contacts. That means your number and name can appear in Truecaller even if you've never used it. If you don't want that:
- If you use Truecaller, open its settings and deactivate your account first.
- Go to Truecaller's official unlisting page at truecaller.com/unlisting.
- Enter your phone number and submit the request.
How to install Truecaller APK on Android
Install Truecaller from Google Play if you can. Without Play Store, install the official app carefully.
- Check your phone runs Android 8.0 or newer.
- Get the app only from Google Play or truecaller.com. Modified "Premium" files from other sites aren't official.
- If you downloaded the file from APKPeer, check that the SHA-256 matches the one on this page. We currently link to Google Play only, so there's no APKPeer file for Truecaller.
- Open the APK and allow your browser or file manager to Install unknown apps when Android asks.
- Tap Install, open Truecaller, and verify your phone number. Choose whether to make it your default phone app.
- Turn off the install permission under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps.
Is Truecaller APK safe?
The official Truecaller app is a legitimate app, published by Truecaller on Google Play and rated Everyone. Play marks it as containing ads and in-app purchases, from $0.99 to $449.00 per item, mostly for Premium.
It asks for powerful permissions, because caller ID needs them: your phone and call logs, contacts, and the ability to show over other apps. If you make it your SMS app, it also reads your messages. That's normal for this kind of app, but it's a lot of access, so install only the official version.
Privacy is the real consideration. Sharing your contacts with Truecaller adds your friends' names and numbers to its directory. Read Truecaller's privacy policy, and if you'd rather not share contacts, you can deny that permission and still get spam warnings.
Modified Truecaller APKs that claim to unlock Premium are especially risky, given how much of your phone the app can see. APKPeer only links to the official app.
Truecaller vs alternatives
- Phone by Google has built-in caller ID and spam protection on many Android phones, and doesn't use your contacts to build a public directory.
- Hiya focuses on spam call detection and blocking, with a lighter approach to caller ID.
- Should I Answer? uses community ratings to flag unwanted numbers, without requiring your contacts.
If spam calls are a daily problem where you live, Truecaller is very effective, and the new Assistant and Family Protection features make it more useful for protecting less tech-savvy relatives. Just decide what you're comfortable sharing before you grant contacts access.
