What is WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is a free messaging and calling app owned by Meta and published on Google Play by WhatsApp LLC. You sign up with your phone number, and you can then send messages, photos, videos, voice notes and documents, make voice and video calls, and join groups. It's the default way people text in much of the world.
Personal chats and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default, using the Signal protocol, so only the people in the conversation can read them. Beyond chats, WhatsApp has Status (posts that disappear after 24 hours), Channels for following news and creators, and Communities for organizing several groups together.
WhatsApp is also one of the few big apps that publishes its own official APK at whatsapp.com/android, for phones that don't have Google Play. That makes the WhatsApp APK easy to get safely, as long as you get it from WhatsApp. It's one of several messaging apps we cover.
What's new in WhatsApp 2.26.32.84
WhatsApp's download page lists version 2.26.32.84 as the current APK. The Google Play listing was last updated on October 31, 2026, and Play shows the version as "Varies with device," because WhatsApp ships slightly different builds to different phones.
The latest release notes on Google Play list these changes:
- Group history for new members. When you add someone to a group, you can choose to share recent messages so they can catch up.
- Moving calls between devices. Group calls can now be transferred between your phone and WhatsApp on desktop.
- Waiting rooms. Calls started from a call link can have a waiting room, so you decide who joins.
- Pinning in group calls. You can pin one participant to a bigger tile.
WhatsApp notes that these features roll out over several weeks, so you might not see all of them straight after updating.
Key features
Encrypted chats and calls
Every personal message and call is end-to-end encrypted. To check a chat, open the contact's info and tap Encryption to compare security codes. For extra protection, turn on end-to-end encrypted backups under Settings → Chats → Chat backup, because regular Google Drive backups aren't covered by chat encryption.
Groups and Communities
Groups can have up to 1,024 members, with admin controls over who can send messages and edit the group info. Communities bring several related groups together, such as all the class groups at a school, under one announcement channel.
Linked devices and WhatsApp Web
You can use the same account on up to four linked devices, such as a computer or tablet, even when your phone is offline. On a computer, open web.whatsapp.com, then on your phone go to Settings → Linked devices → Link a device and scan the QR code.
Disappearing messages and view once
Set chats to delete messages automatically after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. Photos and voice messages can also be sent as "view once," so they disappear after the other person opens them.
Status and Channels
The Updates tab holds Status posts from your contacts and Channels you follow. Channels are one-way broadcasts from organizations and creators, and following one doesn't share your phone number with the admin.
How to install WhatsApp APK on Android
If your phone has Play Store, installing WhatsApp from Google Play is easiest, and updates arrive automatically. Without Play Store, use WhatsApp's official APK.
- On your phone, open whatsapp.com/android in your browser and tap Download WhatsApp directly. Don't use other APK sites.
- If you downloaded the file from APKPeer, check that the SHA-256 matches the one on this page. We link to WhatsApp's own download, so there's no APKPeer file for WhatsApp.
- Open the downloaded file and allow your browser to Install unknown apps when Android asks.
- Tap Install. If you already have WhatsApp, the new version installs over it and keeps your chats.
- Open WhatsApp, verify your phone number, and restore your chat backup if you have one.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps, select your browser, and switch the permission off.
Without Play Store, updates don't arrive automatically. Download the newest APK from whatsapp.com/android every so often, or when WhatsApp tells you your version is out of date.
Is WhatsApp APK safe?
The official WhatsApp APK is safe. The file from whatsapp.com/android is signed with the same key as the Play Store version, so Android treats it as the same app, and it installs over an existing WhatsApp without losing chats.
WhatsApp asks for several permissions. Contacts are used to find who's on WhatsApp, and you can refuse and start chats by number. Camera and microphone are needed for calls and voice notes, and location is only used if you share it in a chat. Review them under Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Permissions.
There are real privacy questions to understand. Encryption protects message content, but WhatsApp still collects metadata such as your phone number, contacts (if you allow it), and when you use the app, and it shares some data with other Meta companies, as described in its privacy policy. Meta also announced in June 2025 that ads would appear in the Updates tab, though not in chats.
The biggest risk is modified WhatsApp APKs, such as "GB" versions with extra features. They aren't made by WhatsApp, they can read your messages, and WhatsApp bans accounts that use them. APKPeer only links to WhatsApp's own downloads.
WhatsApp vs alternatives
- Telegram syncs across devices from the cloud and supports huge groups and bots. The catch is that regular chats aren't end-to-end encrypted; only "secret chats" are.
- Signal uses the same encryption protocol as WhatsApp but collects far less metadata and is run by a non-profit. Fewer of your contacts are likely to be on it.
- WhatsApp Business is the free version for small businesses, with a business profile, catalog and quick replies. For personal chatting, regular WhatsApp is all you need.
If the people you talk to are on WhatsApp, the official app is the way to go. Just get it from WhatsApp, not from a mirror site.

Frequently asked questions
How do I install WhatsApp on Android?
Open Google Play, search for WhatsApp and check the developer is WhatsApp LLC before tapping Install. It needs Android 6.0 or newer. It's free to install, and Play keeps it updated automatically. On phones without Google Play, WhatsApp offers an official APK at whatsapp.com/android, signed with the same key as the Play version.
Is it safe to download the WhatsApp APK?
Yes, if it comes from WhatsApp itself. WhatsApp offers an official APK at whatsapp.com/android for phones without Google Play, signed with the same key as the Play version. Don't install WhatsApp APKs from other sites, and never use modified versions of WhatsApp, which WhatsApp bans and which can expose your messages.
What is the difference between WhatsApp and WhatsApp Web?
WhatsApp is the phone app where your account lives. WhatsApp Web is a way to use that same account in a computer's browser at web.whatsapp.com: you link it by scanning a QR code with the phone app under Linked devices. It isn't a separate download for your phone.
What Android version does WhatsApp need?
WhatsApp's download page lists Android 6.0 or newer as the minimum for the current version. On older Android versions WhatsApp stops working and asks you to update your phone. If you're close to the limit, check the requirement on whatsapp.com before relying on an old device.
Does WhatsApp have ads?
Not in your chats. Meta announced in June 2025 that it would start showing ads in the Updates tab, where Status and Channels live, while personal chats, calls and groups stay ad-free. That's why our info table doesn't give a simple yes or no for ads.
Are WhatsApp messages end-to-end encrypted?
Yes. Personal messages and calls on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted by default, so not even WhatsApp can read them. Chat backups to Google Drive aren't protected that way unless you turn on end-to-end encrypted backup under Settings, Chats, Chat backup.
