What is Discord?
Discord is a chat app built around communities. Each community is a server with its own text channels, voice channels and roles. You can drop into a voice channel to talk while gaming, stream your screen to friends, share memes in a text channel or run a large fan community with moderators and bots. It started in gaming but now hosts study groups, creators, open-source projects and friend groups of every kind.
Discord Inc. released the Android app in 2015. It has passed 500 million downloads on Google Play, and it's in our communication apps category.
What's new in Discord 351.11
The latest Discord APK on Google Play is version 351.11 - Stable, updated on November 3, 2026. Discord's release notes on Play mention:
- Spoiler setting on mobile. The "Show spoiler content" setting from the desktop app is now on Android, so you can always reveal spoiler-tagged text without tapping each one.
- Text clipping fix. Fixed the bottoms of letters such as g, y and p being cut off in some places.
- Hundreds of smaller fixes, listed in Discord's patch notes.
Key features
Servers and channels
Join servers with an invite link or browse public ones. Inside, text channels are organised by topic, and roles control who can see and post where. Threads keep side conversations from flooding the main channel.
Voice and video
Voice channels are always open: tap one to join and talk, and leave when you're done. You can also video call friends, and stream your screen or a game to a voice channel with Go Live.
Direct messages and group DMs
Message friends privately or in small group DMs, with voice and video calls, file sharing, reactions and replies.
Activities and apps
Play built-in games and watch things together inside voice channels. Servers can add bots for moderation, music, polls and games.
Nitro
Nitro is Discord's optional subscription. It adds larger file uploads, HD streaming, custom emoji and stickers across servers, animated avatars and profile themes, and server boosts.
How to install Discord APK on Android
Install Discord from Google Play.
- Check that your phone runs Android 7.0 or newer.
- Open Google Play, search for Discord, and confirm the developer is Discord Inc.
- Tap Install, open the app, and log in or create an account.
- Allow microphone access the first time you join a voice channel.
Discord doesn't offer an official APK outside Google Play. Discord accounts are a common target for scammers, so avoid unofficial files that ask you to log in.
Is Discord APK safe?
The official Discord app is safe to install. It's published by Discord Inc. on Google Play and rated Teen. In-app purchases are for Nitro, server boosts and Shop items. Play doesn't show an ads label, though Discord shows sponsored Quests.
Most Discord risks come from other users:
- Fake Nitro gifts and "free" links. A message offering free Nitro, or asking you to scan a QR code to log in, is almost always a scam to take over your account.
- Strangers in DMs. In Settings → Content & Social, limit who can message you and add you as a friend.
- Two-factor authentication. Turn it on in Settings → Account.
- Teens. Parents can use Family Center to see which servers and friends a teen has, and Discord applies stricter defaults for teen accounts.
Discord settings worth changing
- Who can DM you. In Settings → Content & Social, turn off direct messages from server members you don't know, or switch it off per server.
- Friend requests. Choose who can send you friend requests: everyone, friends of friends, or server members.
- Sensitive media filter. Choose whether Discord blurs or blocks images that may be explicit in DMs and servers.
- Notifications. Long-press a busy server and set notifications to @mentions only, so your phone isn't buzzing all day.
- Data saver. Lower image quality and turn off GIF autoplay to save mobile data.
- Two-factor authentication. Add it in Settings → Account, and save the backup codes somewhere safe.
Tips for new Discord users
Start with a few servers you actually care about, because a dozen busy ones become overwhelming fast. Read each server's rules channel before posting; many communities have specific channels for questions, media and off-topic chat. Use threads for side conversations so the main channel stays readable. In voice channels, push-to-talk or the noise suppression setting keeps background noise down. If someone you don't know messages you with a link, especially one promising free Nitro or asking you to log in, don't click it.
Discord vs alternatives
- Telegram is better for huge broadcast channels and groups, with strong cloud sync.
- WhatsApp is simpler for family and friends you already have as phone contacts.
- Messenger works well if your friends are on Facebook.
For gaming with friends, hanging out in voice, or joining a community around something you love, Discord is the standard. Lock down who can DM you before joining big public servers.

Frequently asked questions
How do I install Discord on Android?
Open Google Play, search for Discord and check the developer is Discord Inc. before tapping Install. It needs Android 7.0 or newer. It's free to install, and Play keeps it updated automatically. Avoid copies from other sites: they aren't from Discord Inc. and may be altered, so the safest way to use Discord is the official listing.
Is Discord free?
Yes. Discord is free for messaging, voice and video calls, and joining or creating servers. Discord Nitro is an optional subscription that adds bigger uploads, HD streaming, custom emoji everywhere and profile customisation. Play lists in-app purchases from $0.99 to $274.94 per item.
How old do you have to be to use Discord?
Discord requires users to be at least 13 in most countries, and older in some. Google Play rates it Teen. Discord offers Family Center so parents can see who their teen talks to, without reading messages.
What is a Discord server?
A server is a community space with its own text and voice channels, roles and rules. Some are small groups of friends; others are large communities for a game, creator or interest. You join one with an invite link or through server discovery.
Does Discord show ads?
Discord has no traditional banner ads, but it does show sponsored Quests, which reward you for playing or watching certain games. Google Play doesn't show a "Contains ads" label for Discord, so APKPeer leaves that row out.
