What is Minecraft Trial?

Minecraft Trial is the free, official demo of Minecraft for Android, published by Mojang. It gives you a time-limited taste of the full game: you spawn in a world made of blocks, punch trees for wood, craft tools, build a shelter and try to survive the first nights when mobs come out.

It exists for one reason. The full Minecraft game on Google Play is paid, and the trial lets you check that it runs well on your phone and that you actually enjoy it before you buy. Mojang's Play listing describes it as a "free, time-limited trial" of survival mode.

It's also the honest answer to a very common search. People look for "Minecraft APK free" and find unauthorized copies of the paid game. Minecraft Trial is what Mojang actually offers for free, and it's one of the adventure games you can install safely.

What's new in Minecraft Trial 1.26.60.4

Minecraft Trial 1.26.60.4 reached Google Play on October 21, 2026. The release notes on Play say only "26.60 Minecraft Trial!", meaning the trial now runs on the same 26.60 release as the full game.

Mojang publishes detailed patch notes for each Minecraft release on minecraft.net, but it doesn't publish separate notes for the trial. The trial gets the same blocks, mobs and fixes that are part of survival mode in that release.

Key features

Survival mode

This is the heart of the trial. You start with nothing, gather wood and stone, craft a crafting table, then tools, weapons and armor. Food matters, night brings zombies and skeletons, and creepers explode if they get close. It's the classic Minecraft experience, just limited in time.

Infinite, generated worlds

Every world is generated from a random seed, with forests, deserts, caves, rivers and villages. Exploring is half the fun: dig down and you'll find coal, iron and, if you're lucky, diamonds.

Touch controls

The mobile version (the Bedrock edition) uses an on-screen joystick and buttons for jumping, placing and breaking blocks. You can customize the layout and button size in Settings → Touch. A Bluetooth controller works too.

A preview of the full game

The full Minecraft adds creative mode with unlimited blocks, multiplayer with friends, Realms (Mojang's paid private servers) and the Marketplace. The trial is meant to show whether the game plays well on your phone before you pay for those.

Minecraft Trial vs the full game

Here's what the free trial includes compared with the paid Minecraft game, based on Mojang's Play listing:

Minecraft TrialFull Minecraft
PriceFreePaid
Survival modeYes, time-limitedYes
Creative modeNoYes
MultiplayerNoYes
Keep your worldDoesn't transfer to the full gameYes

If the trial runs smoothly on your phone, the full game will too, since both use the same Bedrock engine. The trial's main job is to answer that question before you pay.

How to install Minecraft Trial APK on Android

Install Minecraft Trial from Google Play if you can. Without Play Store, sideload the official file carefully.

  1. Check your phone runs Android 8.0 or newer.
  2. Get the trial only from Google Play or Mojang. Files offering the full game for free are unauthorized copies.
  3. If you downloaded the file from APKPeer, check that the SHA-256 matches the one on this page. We currently link to Google Play only, so there's no APKPeer file for the trial.
  4. Open the APK and allow your browser or file manager to Install unknown apps when Android asks.
  5. Tap Install, open the trial and create a new world.
  6. Turn off the install permission under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps.

When you're ready for the full game, buy Minecraft on Google Play. It's a separate app, and your trial world won't carry over.

Is Minecraft Trial APK safe?

The official Minecraft Trial is safe. It's published by Mojang, the Microsoft-owned studio that makes Minecraft, and it has more than 100 million downloads on Google Play. Play rates it Everyone 10+ for fantasy violence and doesn't mark it as containing ads.

The risk lies in what people download instead. Search results are full of "Minecraft APK free download" files that claim to be the full paid game. They're unauthorized copies: sharing them is copyright infringement, they often come bundled with adware or malware, and they can't sign in with a Microsoft account, so you can't use Realms, the Marketplace or most servers.

If you're buying for a child, the full game includes parental controls through the Microsoft account. You can limit multiplayer and chat there. APKPeer only links to the official trial and the official paid game.

Minecraft Trial vs alternatives

  • Roblox is completely free and full of player-made games, including many building games. It's a platform of different experiences rather than one deep sandbox like Minecraft.
  • Terraria is a paid 2D sandbox with a stronger focus on combat, bosses and loot. If you like survival and exploring, it's a great second game.
  • Luanti (formerly Minetest) is a free, open-source voxel engine with community-made games, some very close to Minecraft. It's less polished, but free for good.

Play the trial first. If you find yourself wishing it didn't end, the full Minecraft is worth buying.

It's free to install, and Play keeps it updated automatically, so you never need to download an APK by hand. Avoid copies from other sites: they aren't from Mojang and may be altered, so the safest way to play Minecraft Trial is the official listing.

Is the Minecraft Trial free?

Yes. Minecraft Trial is free to download from Google Play and free to play for a limited time. It's Mojang's official demo of Minecraft. To keep playing after the trial, or to get creative mode and multiplayer, you buy the full Minecraft game on Google Play.

What can you do in the Minecraft Trial?

The trial lets you play Minecraft in survival mode: explore a world, gather resources, craft tools, weapons and armor, and fight off mobs. Creative mode, multiplayer and the rest of the full game aren't included. Mojang describes the trial as time-limited, so treat it as a taste of the game.

Does my Minecraft Trial world transfer to the full game?

No. Mojang's Google Play listing says trial worlds don't transfer to the full game. If you buy Minecraft, you start a new world. Keep that in mind before spending hours building in the trial. Mojang suggests buying the full game during or after the trial if you want to keep playing.

Is there a free full version of Minecraft for Android?

No. The full Minecraft game is paid, and the official free option is this trial. Files claiming to be free full Minecraft APKs are unauthorized copies of a paid game: they're illegal to share, often carry malware, and can't sign in to Minecraft servers or Realms.
