How to calculate a tip
- Enter the bill amount.
- Enter a tip percentage, or tap one of the quick buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%).
- Enter how many people are splitting the bill.
- See the tip, the total with tip and how much each person pays.
The formula
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100. Each person pays (bill + tip) ÷ number of people.
A bill of 80 with a 15% tip is 12, making 92 in total, or 46 each for two people.
Tipping customs vary
Expectations differ a lot from country to country, so check local customs when travelling:
| Region | Typical restaurant tip |
|---|---|
| United States | 15–20%; tipping is expected |
| Canada | 15–20% |
| United Kingdom | 10–12.5%, often added as a service charge |
| Most of Europe | Round up or around 5–10% |
| Japan | Tipping is not customary |
| South Asia | Often 5–10%, or a service charge is included |
These are general guides, not rules. Always check the bill for a "service charge" or "service included" line, because that's already a tip.
Before or after tax?
Many etiquette guides suggest tipping on the amount before tax, but plenty of people tip on the total because it's simpler. The difference is usually small. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.
Splitting fairly
This calculator splits the total evenly, which works when everyone ordered roughly the same. If orders were very different, work out each person's share of the bill first, then apply the same tip percentage to each share using the percentage calculator.
Works in any currency
The calculator doesn't use a currency symbol, so it works the same for dollars, pounds, rupees or any other currency. Everything runs in your browser.
