How to calculate a discount
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the discount percentage.
- If there's a second offer, such as an extra coupon, enter it under Extra discount.
- See the final price, how much you save and the true total discount.
The formula
Final price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100)
For a 20% discount on 2,500: 2,500 × 0.80 = 2,000, saving 500.
Stacked discounts
Shops often advertise "an extra 10% off sale prices". That second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the savings don't simply add up:
| Offer | You might expect | Actual total discount |
|---|---|---|
| 20% + 10% | 30% | 28% |
| 30% + 20% | 50% | 44% |
| 50% + 50% | 100% (free!) | 75% |
The calculator applies discounts one after the other, the way shops do, and shows the real overall percentage.
Shopping tips
- Compare final prices, not percentages. 30% off an expensive item can still cost more than a cheaper item at full price.
- Check the "original" price. Some sales inflate the original price to make the discount look bigger. Price history tools and comparing several shops help.
- Remember tax and delivery. Discounts usually apply before sales tax, and delivery charges can cancel out a small saving. Add tax to the final price with the sales tax calculator.
- App and game sales. Paid apps and in-game items go on sale regularly on Google Play. Knowing the real saving helps decide whether a deal is worth it.
