How to remove extra spaces
- Paste your text into the Input box.
- Choose what to clean: Convert tabs to spaces, Trim each line and Collapse empty lines.
- Copy the cleaned result.
Double spaces are always reduced to single spaces, and leading and trailing spaces are removed from the whole text.
What gets cleaned
| Problem | What the tool does |
|---|---|
| Double or triple spaces | Replaced with a single space |
| Tabs | Turned into spaces (optional) |
| Spaces at the start or end of lines | Removed (optional) |
| Several blank lines in a row | Reduced to one blank line (optional) |
| Non-breaking spaces | Treated as normal spaces |
Non-breaking spaces deserve a special mention. They look exactly like ordinary spaces but behave differently: they stop text from wrapping and make searches and duplicate checks fail. They often sneak in when copying from websites, Word documents or PDFs, and they're a common cause of mysterious formatting problems.
When to use it
- Cleaning up text copied from PDFs or websites before pasting it into a document or app.
- Tidying lists and data before checking for duplicates or sorting.
- Fixing double spaces after full stops, an old typewriter habit that looks out of place online.
- Preparing app descriptions, captions and bios with character limits, where every space counts.
Tips
- If your text also has unwanted line breaks, run remove line breaks first, then this tool.
- To check the length after cleaning, use the word counter, which counts characters with and without spaces.
