How to convert JPG to PNG
- Tap Choose JPG images or drag your files onto the box. JPG, JPEG and JFIF files all work.
- Tap Convert to PNG.
- Tap Download next to each converted file.
There are no settings to worry about: PNG is lossless, so the converted image keeps exactly the pixels of the original.
Why convert a JPG to PNG?
Converting to PNG doesn't make a photo look better. It can't restore detail that JPG compression removed when the photo was first saved. What it does is stop the image getting worse:
- Editing. Every time you save a JPG, it's compressed again and loses a little more detail. Save your working copy as PNG and you can edit and re-save as often as you like.
- Requirements. Some design tools, print services and forms ask for PNG files.
- Adding transparency later. PNG supports transparent areas, so it's the format to use if you plan to remove the background in an editor.
What to expect
| JPG | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy (some detail removed) | Lossless (exact pixels) |
| Typical size for a photo | Small | Several times larger |
| Transparency | No | Yes, but it isn't added automatically |
| Quality after re-saving | Gets worse each time | Stays the same |
The PNG will usually be larger than the JPG, often by a lot for camera photos. That's normal. If file size matters more than editing headroom, keep the JPG or use the image compressor.
JFIF and JPEG files
Files ending in .jfif or .jpeg are the same kind of image as .jpg. Some browsers save images from the web as .jfif, which confuses some apps; converting them to PNG gives you a file every app recognizes.
Nothing leaves your device
Conversion runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded. It works offline once the page has loaded, there's no sign-up, and no watermark is added. To go the other way, use the PNG to JPG converter.
