What is Hill Climb Racing?

Hill Climb Racing is a physics-based driving game from Fingersoft, a Finnish studio. You play Newton Bill, a young driver determined to climb ever-higher hills. Press the gas pedal on the right and the brake on the left, and try to get as far as you can over bumpy terrain without flipping your vehicle, landing on Bill's head, or running out of fuel.

That's the whole game, and it's surprisingly addictive. The physics make every hill a small puzzle: too much gas and you flip backwards, too little and you roll back down. Coins you collect along the way buy upgrades for your engine, suspension, tires and grip, and unlock new vehicles and stages.

It's been on Google Play since September 2012 and has passed a billion downloads. It's small, works offline and runs on almost any phone, which makes it one of the classic racing games on Android, even if it's really more about balance than racing.

What's new in Hill Climb Racing 1.73.2

Version 1.73.2 reached Google Play on October 29, 2026. The release notes on Play list:

  • A new feature, teased only with the line "I didn't know rain could hurt this badly."
  • Translation updates.
  • Various bug fixes.

Fingersoft doesn't spell out the new feature in the notes; the hint suggests something weather-related. You'll see it in the game after updating.

Key features

Simple two-pedal controls

There's a gas pedal and a brake, and that's it. Gas tilts the vehicle back, brake tilts it forward, so balancing in the air is as important as driving on the ground.

Many vehicles

Start with a basic jeep and unlock vehicles like a motocross bike, a monster truck, a tank and even a moon lander. Each handles very differently, and some are better suited to particular stages.

Upgrades

Spend coins to upgrade each vehicle's engine, suspension, tires and four-wheel drive or equivalent. Upgrades are the main way to get further on hard stages.

Varied stages

Stages range from the countryside and desert to the moon, where low gravity sends you flying, and many others with their own terrain and challenges.

Daily rewards and offline play

Log in for daily rewards, or play entirely offline on a flight. Short runs make it easy to fit a few attempts into a spare minute. The game is small and easy on your phone's battery.

Tips for going further

Upgrade the engine first, and grab every fuel can you can reach, since running out of fuel ends more runs than crashing early on. Ease off the gas when you're in the air, and use the brake to tilt your nose down before landing. Collect fuel cans whenever you can, even if it means a slower line. And switch vehicles for stages that don't suit your favorite: some climbs are much easier with a bike or a truck.

Coins and upgrades explained

You earn coins by collecting them on the track and from distance bonuses for reaching milestones. Each upgrade level costs more than the last, so early upgrades are cheap and big gains come quickly, then progress slows. Rather than maxing one vehicle, it's often better to unlock a new vehicle that suits a stage you're stuck on. Daily rewards add a steady trickle of coins if you open the game regularly.

How to install Hill Climb Racing APK on Android

Install Hill Climb Racing from Google Play if you can. Without Play Store, install the official game carefully.

  1. Check your phone runs Android 7.0 or newer.
  2. Get the game only from Google Play or Fingersoft. Files promising free coins or all vehicles unlocked aren't official.
  3. If you downloaded the file from APKPeer, check that the SHA-256 matches the one on this page. We currently link to Google Play only, so there's no APKPeer file for Hill Climb Racing.
  4. Open the APK and allow your browser or file manager to Install unknown apps when Android asks.
  5. Tap Install and open the game.
  6. Turn off the install permission under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps.

Is Hill Climb Racing APK safe?

The official Hill Climb Racing APK is safe. It's published by Fingersoft on Google Play and rated Everyone. Play marks it as containing ads and in-app purchases, from $0.09 to $134.99 per item, some of which include random items.

It's a good game for children, with no violence and simple controls. If a child plays, turn on purchase authentication in Google Play or use Family Link so coin purchases need approval.

Modified Hill Climb Racing APKs with endless coins are widely shared. They aren't from Fingersoft, they're a common way to get adware onto a phone, and they don't receive updates like the one in this release. APKPeer only links to the official game.

Hill Climb Racing vs alternatives

  • Asphalt Legends is the opposite end of racing: licensed supercars, high speed and online races, on more powerful phones.
  • Car Parking Multiplayer is a driving simulator with parking challenges and an online open world.
  • Hill Climb Racing 2 is Fingersoft's sequel, with online races, cups and teams.

For a simple, offline game you can pick up any time, Hill Climb Racing is still hard to put down.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install Hill Climb Racing on Android?

Open Google Play, search for Hill Climb Racing and check the developer is Fingersoft before tapping Install. It needs Android 7.0 or newer. It's free to install, and Play keeps it updated automatically, so you never need to download an APK by hand. Avoid copies from other sites: they aren't from Fingersoft and may be altered, so the safest way to play Hill Climb Racing is the official listing.

Is Hill Climb Racing free?

Yes. Hill Climb Racing is free to download and play. It shows ads and sells optional in-app purchases, which Google Play lists from $0.09 to $134.99 per item, such as coin packs and ad removal. Some purchases include random items. You can unlock vehicles and stages by playing.

Can you play Hill Climb Racing offline?

Yes. The main game, driving stages and earning coins, works without an internet connection. That's one reason it's been a favorite for travel since 2012. Ads and online features such as leaderboards need a connection. Your coins and unlocked vehicles are saved on your phone.

What's the difference between Hill Climb Racing and Hill Climb Racing 2?

Hill Climb Racing is the original single-player game, played stage by stage for distance. Hill Climb Racing 2, also from Fingersoft, adds online races against other players, cups, teams and more customization. Both are free, separate apps.
