What is Google Gemini?
Gemini is Google's AI assistant, and on most new Android phones it has replaced the old Google Assistant. You can type or talk to it, ask it to write or summarise something, plan a trip, explain a photo, generate an image or help with homework. Because it's made by Google, it can also work with your Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube and other Google apps when you allow it.
The app launched on Google Play in February 2024, replacing the earlier Bard chatbot, and has passed 1 billion downloads. It's one of the productivity apps we list, alongside other AI assistants such as ChatGPT.
What's new in Gemini 1.0.995038376
The latest Gemini APK on Google Play is version 1.0.995038376, updated on October 13, 2026. Google's release notes on Play list:
- New models. Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini Omni for productivity and creative work.
- Gemini Spark. A personal AI agent that runs around the clock and proactively manages tasks for you.
- Daily Brief. An agent that puts together a personalised morning summary of what you need to know.
- "Reimagine this" in Gemini Live. Point your camera at something and Gemini redraws the scene with new surroundings, using Google's Nano Banana image model.
New features often roll out gradually by country and account, so you may not see everything the day you update.
Key features
Chat, write and summarise
Ask questions in plain language and follow up naturally. Gemini can draft emails and messages, rewrite text in a different tone, summarise long articles or PDFs you upload, and explain topics step by step.
Gemini Live
Live is a spoken conversation rather than a one-off voice command. You can interrupt Gemini mid-answer, change your mind, and, on supported phones, share your camera or screen so it can talk about what you're seeing, such as a menu in another language or a settings page you're stuck on.
Connected Google apps
With your permission, Gemini can pull information from Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, Maps and YouTube. That's what lets it answer "When is my dentist appointment?" or "Find the flight confirmation email" instead of giving a generic reply.
Images and creativity
Gemini can generate and edit images from a description. The image features use Google's Nano Banana model, and generated images carry an invisible SynthID watermark that identifies them as AI-made.
Phone assistant
Set Gemini as your default assistant and it opens from the power button or "Hey Google". It can set alarms, send messages, control smart home devices and answer questions about whatever is on your screen.
How to install Gemini APK on Android
Most people should install Gemini from Google Play. On many phones it's already preinstalled and only needs updating.
- Check that your phone runs Android 9 or newer, which is the minimum Play lists.
- Open Google Play, search for Gemini, and make sure the developer is Google LLC.
- Tap Install, open the app and sign in with your Google account.
- When asked, choose whether Gemini should become your default assistant. You can change this later in the app's settings.
If you can't use Google Play, use the web version at gemini.google.com in Chrome instead. APKPeer doesn't host a Gemini APK, and Gemini depends on Google services, so it won't work properly on phones without them.
Is Gemini APK safe?
The official Gemini app is safe to install. It's published by Google LLC on Google Play, rated Teen, and has no ads. The bigger questions are about privacy and accuracy.
- Privacy. Gemini Apps Activity is saved to your Google account by default and may be reviewed to improve Google's products. Turn it off or set auto-delete under Settings → Gemini Apps Activity, and avoid sharing passwords, health details or other sensitive information in chats.
- Accuracy. Like every AI assistant, Gemini can state wrong things confidently. Check important facts, especially medical, legal and financial ones, against a reliable source.
- Fake apps. Search results and ads sometimes show lookalike "Gemini AI" apps from other developers that charge subscriptions. The real app's package name is com.google.android.apps.bard and the developer is Google LLC.
Gemini settings worth changing
A few minutes in settings makes Gemini more useful and more private.
- Default assistant. In the Gemini app, tap your profile picture, then Settings → Digital assistants from Google. Choose Gemini, or switch back to Google Assistant on phones where that's still offered.
- Gemini Apps Activity. Under Settings → Gemini Apps Activity, turn activity off, or set auto-delete to 3, 18 or 36 months. With activity off, Google still keeps chats for a short period to run the service and handle safety.
- Connected apps. Under Settings → Apps, turn off any Google app you don't want Gemini to read, such as Gmail or Drive.
- Lock screen. Decide whether Gemini can answer on the lock screen. Turning it off stops anyone with your phone from asking about your calendar or messages.
Free vs paid Gemini
The free version covers everyday chat, writing help, image questions and Gemini Live. Google's paid AI plans, billed through your Google account, add higher limits, the most capable models, longer documents and extra storage. If you mainly ask quick questions and draft messages, the free tier is usually enough. Try it for a couple of weeks before paying, and check that the features you want are available in your country and language.
Gemini vs alternatives
- ChatGPT is the best-known alternative, with strong writing tools and a large ecosystem of custom GPTs. It doesn't connect to your Google apps the way Gemini does.
- Claude from Anthropic is popular for long documents, careful writing and coding help.
- Perplexity focuses on search: every answer comes with links to its sources, which makes fact-checking easier.
If you already live in Google's apps, Gemini is the most convenient choice, because it can see your calendar, mail and files when you allow it. If you'd rather keep your AI assistant separate from your Google account, one of the alternatives above may suit you better.

Frequently asked questions
How do I install Gemini on Android?
Open Google Play, search for Gemini and check the developer is Google LLC before tapping Install. It needs Android 9 or newer. It's free to install, and Play keeps it updated automatically. Avoid copies from other sites: they aren't from Google LLC and may be altered, so the safest way to use Gemini is the official listing.
Is Google Gemini free?
Yes. The Gemini app is free to install and use with a Google account. Google's paid AI plans add higher usage limits, its most capable models and extra features. Play shows no in-app purchase label because those plans are sold through Google's own subscription system.
Does Gemini replace Google Assistant?
On most Android phones, yes. Gemini can be set as your default assistant, so holding the power button or saying "Hey Google" opens Gemini instead of the old Assistant. You can switch back in Gemini's settings on phones where Google still offers that option.
What is Gemini Live?
Gemini Live is a back-and-forth voice conversation with Gemini. You can interrupt it, change topic and, on supported phones, share your camera or screen so it can talk about what you're looking at. The latest update adds "reimagine this" to redraw camera scenes.
Does Google use my Gemini chats?
By default, Gemini Apps Activity is saved to your Google account and may be reviewed to improve Google's services. You can turn it off or set auto-delete in the Gemini app under Settings → Gemini Apps Activity. Don't share sensitive personal details in chats.
