What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant, and this is its official Android app. You type or speak a question and get an answer in plain language: explaining a topic, drafting an email, summarizing a document, translating, planning a trip or helping with code. It's the same ChatGPT you use at chatgpt.com, with the same account and chat history.

The app arrived on Google Play in July 2023 and has passed a billion downloads. The phone version adds things that make more sense on a phone than on a computer: talking to ChatGPT out loud, pointing your camera at something and asking about it, and sharing text or images into it from other apps.

It's one of the most useful productivity apps you can install, as long as you treat its answers as a helpful first draft rather than the final word. AI assistants can be confidently wrong, so check anything important.

What's new in ChatGPT 1.2026.300

ChatGPT 1.2026.300 reached Google Play on October 30, 2026. The release notes on Play say only "Minor fixes and improvements."

OpenAI updates the app almost every week and rarely lists details in the Play notes. New models and features usually appear in the app without a separate update, and OpenAI announces the bigger ones on its website and in the app itself.

Key features

Chat by text or voice

Type in the message box, or tap the voice button to talk. In voice mode you can have a spoken back-and-forth conversation, which is handy while cooking, walking or driving. Your voice chats appear in your history afterward as text.

Ask about photos and files

Tap the + button to take a photo, pick an image, or attach a file such as a PDF. You can ask ChatGPT to read a menu in another language, explain a chart, or summarize a long document.

ChatGPT can search the web for current information and shows the sources it used, so you can check them. It's useful for recent news, prices or anything that changes often.

Chat history and memory

Your conversations are saved so you can return to them, and ChatGPT can remember preferences you share. You can view and delete memories, or use a temporary chat that isn't saved, from the app's settings.

Share into ChatGPT

Use Android's share menu to send text, links or images from other apps straight into a new chat. It's the quickest way to ask about something you're reading.

Google Play also marks the app as containing ads. The free plan is enough for everyday questions. A paid plan makes sense if you hit the limits often or rely on ChatGPT for work.

How to install ChatGPT APK on Android

Install ChatGPT from Google Play if you can, and check that the developer is listed as OpenAI. Without Play Store, sideload the official app carefully.

  1. Check your phone runs Android 7.1 or newer.
  2. Get the app only from Google Play or links on chatgpt.com. There are many fake ChatGPT apps.
  3. If you downloaded the file from APKPeer, check that the SHA-256 matches the one on this page. We currently link to Google Play only, so there's no APKPeer file for ChatGPT.
  4. Open the APK and allow your browser or file manager to Install unknown apps when Android asks.
  5. Tap Install, open ChatGPT, and sign in with your OpenAI, Google, Microsoft or Apple account.
  6. Turn off the install permission under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps.

Is ChatGPT APK safe?

The official ChatGPT app is safe to install. It's published by OpenAI on Google Play, rated Teen, and its permissions match its features: microphone for voice, camera and files for attachments, and notifications. You can review them under Settings → Apps → ChatGPT → Permissions.

Privacy deserves attention, because people tell AI assistants a lot. By default, OpenAI may use conversations from personal accounts to train its models. Turn that off under Settings → Data Controls if you'd rather it didn't, and avoid pasting passwords, ID numbers or other people's private information into any chatbot.

The biggest risk is fake apps. Search for ChatGPT on Android and you'll see lookalike icons and names from other developers, some charging for a thin wrapper around someone else's service. Check the package name com.openai.chatgpt and the developer name OpenAI. APKPeer only links to the official app.

ChatGPT vs alternatives

  • Google Gemini is built into Android and works closely with Gmail, Docs and other Google apps. It's the more convenient choice if you live in Google's ecosystem.
  • Claude from Anthropic is strong at writing and working with long documents. Its free plan has tighter limits, and it doesn't generate images.
  • Perplexity focuses on search, giving answers with sources up front. It's better for research questions than for open-ended creative work.

For a capable all-round AI assistant on your phone, ChatGPT is the one most people start with.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install ChatGPT on Android?

Open Google Play, search for ChatGPT and check the developer is OpenAI before tapping Install. It needs Android 7.1 or newer. It's free to install, and Play keeps it updated automatically, so you never need to download an APK by hand. Avoid copies from other sites: they aren't from OpenAI and may be altered, so the safest way to use ChatGPT is the official listing.

Is the ChatGPT app free?

Yes, ChatGPT is free to download and use with an OpenAI account. The free plan has usage limits on the most capable models and some features. Paid plans, sold as in-app purchases from $8.00 to $500.00 on Google Play, raise those limits and add features. Google Play also lists the app as containing ads.

Is the ChatGPT APK safe?

The official ChatGPT app from OpenAI is safe. Its package name is com.openai.chatgpt, and it's published by OpenAI on Google Play. Many fake "ChatGPT" apps exist, some charging subscriptions for a basic wrapper, so check the developer name says OpenAI before installing or paying.

Does ChatGPT use my conversations for training?

By default, OpenAI may use conversations from personal accounts to improve its models. You can turn this off in the app under Settings, Data Controls, by switching off the option to improve the model for everyone. Temporary chats aren't saved to your history either.

Can I use the same ChatGPT account on my phone and computer?

Yes. Sign in with the same OpenAI account on Android and at chatgpt.com, and your chat history syncs between them. A paid plan bought on Google Play also applies on the web, though you manage or cancel it through Google Play's subscription settings.
