What is Free Fire?

Free Fire is a battle royale shooter from Garena. Fifty players parachute onto an island, scavenge for weapons and gear, and fight while a safe zone shrinks around them. The last player or team standing wins, a "Booyah!" in Free Fire's language. Matches last about ten minutes, which is a big part of its appeal on phones.

The other big reason for its popularity is that it runs on almost anything. Free Fire needs only Android 5.0 or newer, and it was designed for budget phones with limited memory, which made it hugely popular in South America, Southeast Asia and other regions where those phones are common. It's been on Google Play since December 2017 and has passed a billion downloads.

Garena also makes Free Fire MAX, a separate app with better graphics that shares the same accounts and matches. Both are among the most-played action games on Android.

What's new in Free Fire 1.132.1

Version 1.132.1 reached Google Play on September 10, 2026, and brought a crossover with NARUTO SHIPPUDEN, which is why the Play listing is currently titled "Free Fire x NARUTO SHIPPUDEN." According to the release notes on Play:

  • Nine Tails Strikes. Capture the Sharingan control point to call in strikes on an area of your choice.
  • Ninjutsu Showdown. Pick up iconic ninjutsu scrolls in Battle Royale, or capture Cyber Airdrops to unlock them in Clash Squad.
  • Ninja Academy. Explore the Hidden Leaf Village and the new Ninjutsu Academy.
  • Ninja Tools and Revival. Throw Kunai, and revive teammates directly at Revival Points.

Key features

Battle Royale

The classic mode: 50 players, one island, a shrinking zone. Play solo, in pairs or in squads of four. Choose where to land, loot weapons and armor, and use vehicles to stay inside the safe zone.

Clash Squad

A faster 4v4 mode played over several rounds. You buy weapons between rounds with money earned in the previous one, so it plays more like a tactical shooter than a survival game.

Characters and skills

Each character has a special skill, such as healing faster or running quicker, and you can equip a combination of skills before a match. Characters are unlocked with gold, diamonds or events.

Short matches for any phone

Matches are short, the download is light compared with most shooters, and the game runs well on phones with little memory. Graphics settings can be lowered further for older devices.

Events and collaborations

Garena runs constant events every few weeks, each with its own login rewards and missions, from seasonal updates to crossovers like the current NARUTO SHIPPUDEN collaboration, with limited-time modes, maps and rewards.

How to install Free Fire APK on Android

Install Free Fire from Google Play if you can. Without Play Store, install the official game carefully.

  1. Check your phone runs Android 5.0 or newer.
  2. Get the game only from Google Play or Garena's official site. Files promising free diamonds or advantages aren't official.
  3. If you downloaded the file from APKPeer, check that the SHA-256 matches the one on this page. We currently link to Google Play only, so there's no APKPeer file for Free Fire.
  4. Open the APK and allow your browser or file manager to Install unknown apps when Android asks.
  5. Tap Install, connect to Wi-Fi, and open the game to download the remaining data. Link your account to Google or Facebook so you don't lose progress.
  6. Turn off the install permission under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps.

Is Free Fire APK safe?

The official Free Fire APK is safe. It's published by Garena on Google Play and rated Teen for violence and blood. Play marks it as having in-app purchases (from $0.09 to $99.99 per item), some of which include random items.

Account safety is the big issue in Free Fire. "Free diamonds" generators and top-up sites that ask for your login are scams that steal Garena and Google accounts. Only top up through the game itself or Garena's official top-up site.

Free Fire is also one of the most targeted games for cheat tools, such as aimbots, auto-headshot scripts and modified APKs. They aren't made by Garena, they often carry malware, and Garena's anti-cheat system bans accounts that use them, often permanently. APKPeer only links to the official game.

Free Fire vs alternatives

  • PUBG Mobile has 100-player matches, bigger maps and more realistic gunplay. It needs a more powerful phone and longer matches.
  • Free Fire MAX is the same game with better graphics, for phones that can handle it.
  • Call of Duty: Mobile combines battle royale with fast multiplayer modes and well-known maps from the console series.

For quick battle royale matches that run on almost any phone, Free Fire is hard to beat.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install Free Fire on Android?

Open Google Play, search for Free Fire and check the developer is Garena International before tapping Install. It needs Android 5.0 or newer. It's free to install, and Play keeps it updated automatically, so you never need to download an APK by hand. Avoid copies from other sites: they aren't from Garena International and may be altered, so the safest way to play Free Fire is the official listing.

Is Free Fire free to play?

Yes. Free Fire is free to download and play. Garena makes money from in-app purchases of diamonds, the premium currency used for characters, skins and passes, which Google Play lists from $0.09 to $99.99 per item. Some purchases include random items. Paying doesn't make weapons stronger.

What's the difference between Free Fire and Free Fire MAX?

Both are official games from Garena and share the same accounts, matches and items. Free Fire is the lighter version that runs on low-end phones and needs Android 5.0 or newer. Free Fire MAX has better graphics and effects but needs a more powerful phone and more storage.

Why is the game called Free Fire x NARUTO SHIPPUDEN on Google Play?

Garena temporarily renames the Google Play listing during big crossover events. Version 1.132.1 brought a NARUTO SHIPPUDEN collaboration with ninja-themed modes and items. It's the same Free Fire app; the name returns to normal when the event ends. Free Fire's package name, com.dts.freefireth, stays the same.

Can I get free diamonds in Free Fire?

Not from generators, apps or websites that promise them. Those are scams that steal Garena or Google accounts. You can earn some rewards in events and with the Booyah Pass, and Garena runs official top-up promotions, but diamonds otherwise cost money.
