What is Shazam?

Shazam is the app that tells you what song is playing. Hear something in a café, a shop or a video, tap the big Shazam button, and a few seconds later you see the title and artist, with lyrics, the music video and links to play it on a streaming service. It's listed on Google Play as "Shazam: Find Music & Concerts" and published by Apple Inc., which bought Shazam in 2018.

Shazam works by recording a short sample and matching its "fingerprint" against a huge database of songs. That's why it works through background noise and even on songs you only hear a few seconds of.

It's free on Android, with no ads and no in-app purchases, and has more than 500 million downloads on Google Play. It's one of the most useful music and audio apps to keep on your phone, even if you only open it now and then.

What's new in Shazam

The Shazam app on Google Play was last updated on October 30, 2026. Google Play shows the version and minimum Android version as "Varies with device."

The release notes on Play are general: Apple says it keeps making the app faster and better, and reminds you to create an account so your Shazams are backed up and synced between devices. The developer hasn't published detailed notes for this update.

Open the app and tap the Shazam button, and it listens and shows a match, usually within a few seconds. Results include the song, artist and album, plus lyrics and the music video where available.

Pop-up Shazam

Pop-up Shazam lets you identify music playing in other apps on your phone, such as a song in a video or social media post, without leaving that app. Turn it on in settings, then tap the floating button or notification.

Auto Shazam

Auto Shazam keeps identifying songs in the background, which is handy at a party or while watching a film. It runs until you turn it off, and Android shows a notification while it's active.

Your library

Every song you Shazam is saved to your library, so you can find that song you heard last week, along with when you heard it. With an account, your library is backed up and syncs across devices.

Concerts

Shazam shows upcoming concerts for artists you've Shazamed, and can suggest shows near you if you allow location access.

Tips for better results

Hold your phone closer to the speaker in a loud room, and give Shazam a few seconds of the song rather than the first second. If you're offline, Shazam anyway: it saves the recording and identifies the song when you reconnect. And add the Shazam widget to your home screen, so you can start it before the song ends.

Shazam and your music apps

Shazam can connect to music services so the songs you identify are easy to play. Each result has buttons to open the song in a streaming app, and in settings you can link Spotify or Apple Music so your Shazams are added to a playlist automatically. That turns Shazam into a running list of everything you've discovered, ready to listen to properly later.

How to install Shazam APK on Android

Install Shazam from Google Play and check that the developer is Apple Inc.

1. Open Google Play and search for Shazam, or use the link above.
2. Tap Install, open Shazam and allow microphone access when you first tap the button.
3. If your phone has no Play Store, any Shazam APK comes from a third-party mirror. Android will only install it over an existing Shazam if it's signed by Apple.

Is Shazam APK safe?
